I led a campaign to add a patient pavilion and healing garden when people said, That will never happen. And I led a $10.4 million capital campaign for a first ever Heart Center, new ER and Womens and Infants Center on the heels of the largest hospital bankruptcy in U.S. history.Impossible is just a lofty word thrown around by people who play it safe. It is a notion to believe that jus t because something isnt mainstream or the norm it cannot be done. More significantly it is a trigger message laid down from previous experience by well-meaning people who wanted to protect you from disappointment. Dont take risk because you will fail and be hurt. Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. Its nothing.All the leaders I coach want the same thing to engage their teams, clients and customers to take action. They want to advance in their career, get the promotion and be paid more. They dont want to do that at the expense of their well-being and rightfully so. An engaging presence happens when you align your intention with your attention and emotions. This results in the balance of fear and hope. But how do you take yourself to the edge of where your comfort zone meets revolution to have that balanced presence. Everybody likes to feel comfortable. You want to grow, innovate and soar with eagles but sometimes when you do your comfort zone clips your wings right at take off.You know the feeling of imminent success its when you sense that adrenaline thrill and a twinge of fear at exactly the same moment. You are excited to see what happens next. You have the confidence to jump off the cliff of security and know that you will fly not descend to the ground like Wylie Kayote. You have a clear line of sight to the horizon even though you are not sure what is there. The destination need not be in vivid view. You just know you will get there.I never saw being successful as impossible. I didnt even see it as a dare. I saw it as inevitable. I was mindful of my goal which was to be successful in the shortest time possible. I had four children who were hungry and needed an education. Failure was not an option.The path to centered leadership is not linear. Leaders zig-zag every day. purple drank in to the questions that arise along the way. Squeeze into that space between Im not sure and I am really excited to uncover opportunity. Allow your questions to lead you down the path. Dont seek perfect answers. Just listen. Solutions will come into view when you are completely open and vulnerable enough to accept that DONE is better than PERFECT. You need not have it all figured out. Self-awareness is your guide not anxiety. Allow discomfort to be part of the process. Dont run from it or it will run your life.Pause and be curious to the journey. Who is there? What is important? Meaning is right in front of you. When you play it safe meaning has no one to soar with.Disappointment is the result of unmet expectations. I focus on goals and outcomes in my work because that is how we measure and retool. I do not expect to control the process of how I get there. I do plan then allow innovation to unfold and trust that modifying the process is as essential as innovation. I need not control everything. Just observe itI got over the fear of rejection early as I processed the realities of divorce. I learned to lean in to vulnerability when I was afraid because leaning out left me detached from even the good feelings such as joy, love and fulfillment. And I realized the value of living in the moment as I became an observer of life as opposed to being the conductor of it. There is magic in silence.So, when anyone tells you your goals are impossible, I suggest that you ask them what they would do if they knew they could not fail. If they cant answer, youll know where theyll be in a year. The bigger question is where do you want to be in a year?

I used to joke that I bartered for everything but my rent, and I would have if I could, says Ester Fischer, a massage therapist in New York. Instead, I got chewed out.Why did you wait so long to call? she asked.You see, she had heard about Southwests engine blowing out a window and almost sucking a woman out of the plane. Naturally, my worrywart mother assumed the woman sucked out of the plane was me.In the past, I have avoided these kind of family phone calls while on trips. It seems that, when Im gone, theres always a fire to put out or some concern that must be han dled now.As a consultant, I also see avoidance used as a workplace coping mechanism. Bosses avoid difficult performance conversations, executives avoid talking about upcoming changes, and employees avoid giving schwimmbad news to their managers. However, avoidance and withholding often makes the situation much worse than if we would just address the issues at hand and keep everyone updated.In short, both family systems and workplace cultures experience a fair amount of avoidable drama. We falsely assume that the real problem is drama when, in fact, the problem is the avoidance of addressing the drama square on. We see the elephant, but no one is willing to acknowledge it.Why we avoid has less to do with character and mora to do with awareness and courage. We are unaware that, at the root, we are simply afraid of all the emotions that will surface - theirs and ours.We are afraid of our own gemeindewiese. We dont want to have regrets. Or we may be afraid of hurting their feelings or seeing their surprising reaction. In the end, the root issue is fear of feeling our own emotions.As a result, we learn how to cope by using avoidance or taking on the other persons issues so that their worries become our problems. I call this rescuing in Stop Workplace Drama.In my own personal growth, Im working on letting others feel what they feel without having to change them to make myself feel better, or without reacting to their personal drama.I reassured Mom that I was fine. I didnt take the bait. I didnt engage in the drama. I was glad that I was able to stand in peace rather than avoid the conversation just so I could have peace.What good came out of the situation is that I saw some leadership lessons just waiting to be shared.The leadership lessonsDrama is a part of life at home and at work and requires us to grow personally.Avoidance is a coping mechanism where we disengage when we use the irresponsible language of blame and excuse-making.The root problem is not drama, bu t the fear of strong emotions. We fear our own anger and other peoples emotional reactions.Sometimes we are the ones others avoid. When we as leaders lead with worry, negativity and doubt, our employees learn to avoid sharing important information.Growth requires the courage to engage in a conversation even though you already know how it is going to play out.
