They offer travel packages to the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, World Cup and Okotobefest (to name a few).From the second the interview started, Jessica, one of the co-founders, and I hit it off. I love to travel and I am passionate about sports, so the company was a perfect fit! After a second meeting where I met the Vancouver team, I was hired.What type of wo rk did you do during your internship?I was hired on in advance of the Vancouver Winter Games, which at the time were about 8 months away. I was one of the few locals that worked for the company so I worked closely with those planning excursions, dinners and activities that highlighted Vancouver and Whistler. I was responsible for finding and signing a clothing sponsor, venue and various location management, guide staffing, and customer service ensuring that what the customer wanted, and what they paid for, was what they received.What was one significant thing you learned about working during your internship?Network, network, network! Other than passion for the events, it is the relationships in the industry that has made Ludus Tours a successful business. Networking was something that was preached to us in school. I was never comfortable in those situations and often avoided them. But witnessing how essential networking and building relationships with other industry professionals w as in the real world, I had to overcome my fear.How did your internship lead to a job offer?I worked with Ludus as an intern throughout the summer of 2009. In September 2009 I was registered for my last year of University and Ludus offered me a paid part-time position so I could stay with the company while I was in school. As a thank you for the summer work, they sent me to Germany to help run the 2009 Oktoberfest tour.During the Olympics in February 2010, the UBC university was closed and I was able to work full time during the Winter Olympics. I continued my role as Event Manager and was responsible for all the hotel and tour confirmations. I was also able to attend around 15 Olympic events during that time.Following the Olympics, I took a couple of months off to focus on and finish school. In June of 2011, I graduated and accepted a full time position as the PR Manager of Ludus Tours. I am also in charge of the social media. I have since been told that I was hired over others for the full time position because I was the best fit. I love the events Ludus runs and live and breathe our core values.This summer I spent July in Spain helping to organize our Running of the Bulls Tour. I was also in Spain when they won the World Cup!I just returned from Germany where I spent a month helping run our Okotberfest and Passion Play program.Any words of wisdom you would like to share with current college students?Having a job while in school more than doubles your work load, but the experiences both positive and negative are invaluable. [7:49] Nikki and David recently self-published a childrenâs book, Nikki Durant and the Terrible Canât, together. David originally wrote the book when Nikki was âa little baby.â Thirty years later, with a child of her own, Nikki drew the illustrations for the book. When it was ready, Nikki worked to âget it out into the world for him.â [8:38] David saw tremendous value in sitting with his daughter and reading books to her. As he was doing that, he came up with stories of his own to tell, that he thought would be worthwhile, educational, and inspirational, not only for Nikki but also for other children. He wrote multiple books, over time. [9:57] Nikki explains the story of Nikki Durant, who overcomes all the obstacles in her way to get to a place called âThere.â David wrote the story as an example and a message for his daughter, Nikki. [10:58] David intended the story as a means of opening a dialog with Nikki about not being intimidated by the challenges of life. [11:20] Nikki had started a company with her mother and brother a few years ago and David had started working at the company. Recently, they sold the company and David retired. With more time and energy on their hands, Nikki and David had time to dedicate to the project, including Nikkiâs work to illustrate the book. [12:05] With Nikkiâs son being four years old, and being fascinated by books, Nikki felt now was the time to get it done. Nikki also wants her son to be raised to overcome any obstacles that come his way with a strong sense of self-advocacy, so she is glad to have the book in his hands. [12:57] The Yeagers are donating 100% of the profit to Kids In Need of Defense â" KIND, that works to provide legal services to children who have been separated from their families at the U.S. border. They also provide representation for children who would otherwise be showing up before judges alone. [13:49] KIND also advocates for changing the laws that impact children coming into the U.S. and being separated from their parents. [14:18] David was a stay-at-home dad while his wife pursued a career. David became a foster parent, as well, to do something positive for others. Over several years, they fostered four children at different times. David learned how traumatic it is for children to be separated from their parents, even when it is necessary to protect them. [16:14] David wants to help, in whatever way he can, to mitigate some of the damage and contribute to helping the people working to lessen the negative impacts of some of the policies and practices in place, separating children from families. [16:43] There are different ways to communicate with children. Sometimes it can be through books and discussions more than just trying to explicitly teach somebody a lesson. [17:10] Nikki is living in Bangkok, Thailand with her husband and son. They have been there for about a year. [17:27] Nikki started illustrating the book about 10 years ago. She stopped after three pages, having lost interest in illustrating âother peopleâs books.â She put it away until very recently. Nikki painted in acrylics. She finished all the pictures, redoing some of them. Then she scanned them all to a computer and did the layout electronically. [18:05] Publishing books is very affordable in Bangkok. Production costs in the U.S. are much higher. For the next run, production costs, with shipping, will be less than $1.00 per book. At a selling price of $10.00, they will donate almost $9.00 per book sold. The first production run came to about $3.00 per book. [19:00] David wrote a lot of books. There will be quite a few more to come. Nikki drew the pictures for another one, many years ago, that she is considering redoing, and there is another she may start illustrating soon. Nikkiâs goal is to have a second book done in the next six months. [20:00] David is 65. This experience is a reinvention for David and a time of discovery. Both David and his wife retired at the end of 2018, so they are exploring how to use the time available to them, including working with his writings of the past. [20:59] It was a joy for David to see the book become real that had always been in his head.There is a real sense of satisfaction that Nikki, the child David was trying to teach and inspire, is now a part of the process of completing the book, for others and her own child. [22:11] Nikki tells how she could tell her usually unexcitable father was excited on first seeing the book. [23:16] Nikki had the story in an email sent from David. Nikki had to break it into pages and come up with the images based on the words on the page. Besides the interior illustrations, she designed the cover, using illustrations from the book. [24:57] Nikki tells how it came to pass that she illustrated the book. She had gone through a vocational art program. Once or twice David had hinted that it would be nice if Nikki or someone she knew drew the pictures for the story. [25:31] Itâs nearly impossible to get a childrenâs book publisher to pick up an unknown author. There are so many childrenâs books, already. To pay someone to do high-quality illustrations is extremely expensive, so itâs hard to recoup those costs. Nikki always considered that she had the capability to do it and she really loved Davidâs books. [26:02] It almost felt to Nikki like an obligation to do the illustrations for the books she had loved from her childhood, so thatâs how she came around to it. [26:14] Marc has a good friend through Leadership Austin who aged out of the foster care system. Marc also knows people in organizations at the border and he lives in Mexico, so he feels connected to the Yeagerâs story in several ways. [26:52] Nikki talks about the distribution of the book. They also created lesson plans that go along with the book and they plan to do read-alouds in schools, with activities for teachers and classes. [27:31] Nikki and David are working very hard to get more reviews and word-of-mouth. Nikki invites listeners of the Repurpose Your Career podcast to spread the message. When to spend your money on career coaching - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
When to spend your money on career coaching I had recently worked with an accountant whoâd been to 17 (yes, seventeen!) interviews in the last several weeks, yet she still hadnât secured a job offer. Her interview technique was very poor though, and I was very pleased that after our session, she secured a job offer after her next interview. Iâve also worked with a senior manager who got through to the final interview stage 4 times in recent weeks â" he was obviously pretty strong already, so we only had to tweak his interview technique and delivery style a little bit for him to succeed within a short time frame. Iâd also spoken to someone else, letâs call her Kate. Kate has been looking for a new job for 7 months now. We had a conversation, and sheâs told me about all the negative interview feedback sheâd been receiving. I knew I could help her having dealt with hundreds of similar clients before. Yet Kate didnât want to spend any money as she wasnât working right now. That got me thinking about a lot of other people I come across who are just like Kate. They view investing in their career as a cost, not an investment. They donât realize that looking for a job is like running a business. I know youâve probably heard this before. But letâs get real with it. When a business hires a consultant, it is viewed as an investment not a cost. ROI is determined. Need is greater than cost. And a decision is made. (plus consultants are tax deductable) I find it strange that job seekers donât see their career coaches as a similar investment. Instead most people make the mistake of only looking at the price tag. And that is bad business. After all, your career or interview coach may be able to shave months off of your job search (if they are any good, that is). There are plenty of average ones out there. So how do you determine your investment? First, think about how much you used to earn. Letâs say that is £3,000 per month. Therefore, the opportunity cost of not having a job is £3,000 per month minus unemployment benefits (if you have any). You lose £3,000 every month. Kate Iâve mentioned before used to be on £56k per year in her previous job. Even if her new job was only going to be £50k per year, sheâs already lost out on close to £30k by not working and not getting any support that would get her the result she is looking for. A good interview/career coach or some kind of job search program will cost you between £200 (if you only need one session) and £1500 in total. An interview coaching session will cost you £150- £300. I canât tell you how many clients Iâve seen who have been out of work for months (in one case 2 years!) and who got a job within several weeks (sometimes within a week!) of working with me. The same clients who thought spending £200 on getting some support was âtoo expensiveâ ended up losing out on £10k, £20, £50k by not getting the support they needed and wasting months on unsuccessful interviewing. What Questions Should I Ask? When deciding on a career/interview coach or job seeking program, you only really need to know if they can help you get a result. So ask them: ⢠What is the average number of months your clients take to get a job? ⢠How many job interviews do you think you can help me get per week? ⢠What is your success rate? ⢠What is your recruitment/interviewing experience? (There are a lot of consultants out there whoâve never worked in recruitment, they probably canât find jobs themselves and so they pretend to help others find employment) Where to Start If you donât know what you want to do or want a complete career change, you really need to see a career change expert. Someone who can help you with self-assessments and personality matching. I donât specialize in career change myself but I could recommend someone if you were interested.
